How Do You Get Tinnitus
Tinnitus is not, in fact one condition, but a symptom that is caused by a variety of different things. Tinnitus is the perception of a sound in the ear that does not exist in real life. Everyone has probably had an annoying ring in their ears, but tinnitus is much more severe. It can be quite debilitating, causing people to suffer, among other things, sleep loss and irritability. It is a symptom that must be looked at by a doctor or ear specialist. The sound actually heard by someone with tinnitus can be a number of different things. Usually it is a ringing but it can take the form of a buzzing or whining, or an even more clearly defined sound such as a musical tune.
As I said before, tinnitus has a wide variety of causes, most of which are man made. The most common cause is called “noise induced hearing loss.” This can come from listening to very loud music, especially through headphones, for long periods of time, or from a short, deafening sound, like an explosion. It can also develop naturally as people age and it often accompanies loss of hearing.
Tinnitus can also be divided into objective and subjective forms. Objective tinnitus is objective because it involves a genuine sound coming from the ear. This can be caused by muscle spasms of altered blood flow and, because it can be detected by a clinician, is easily diagnosed.
Subjective tinnitus, which is usually caused by noise induced hearing loss, involves no real sound – the sound is only perceived by the patient and is a problem with the reliability of the ear rather than being an actual measurable sound. This is much harder to identify than objective tinnitus. It is also much more common.
Subjective tinnitus can be measured by playing sounds to the patient and asking whether they can hear them easily. If the sound played is of similar frequency and is the same volume, or quieter as the sound of the tinnitus, the patient will not be able to hear it.
The best way to prevent subjective tinnitus is to avoid turning headphones up to the louder settings, they are particularly problematic as they pump sound straight into the ear without giving any of it the chance to be absorbed. There is very little you can do to prevent objective tinnitus, but it is very rare anyway. Just remember: if you are suffering from any kind of tinnitus, consult a doctor or ear specialist immediately.
