Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital
The Fistula Hospital in Addis Ababa was built in 1975 by Dr Reginald and Dr Catherine Hamlin to meet the need for specialised treatment of patients with obstetric fistulae, common in Sub-Saharan Africa and other poor countries where good care in childbirth is not available. Mothers who develop complications will either not survive or will deliver a stillbirth.75% of the population in Ethiopia live an average of two and a half days walk away from the hospital but patients will make the journey to benefit from necessary surgery and nursing.
The hospital comprises one large 50 bedded ward, an admission room and laboratory. The operating theatre has four operating tables. More than 1,200 patients are admitted annually, no one is turned away and all treatment is free.
Echo has been supporting the work of the Fistula Hospital for a number of years both with regular donations and with low cost supplies. In 1998 the hospital was visited by the ECHO Chief Executive and two other staff members.
