Hospital Evangelico Honduras

Hospital Evangelico was founded in 1949 by the Central American Mission, and was handed over to Honduran control in 1969. Located in Siguatepeque, a city of 40,000 people, it is a not-for-profit 66 bed facility employing 12 doctors and over 300 nurses. It is also one of the few hospitals in our part of Honduras.

Few people can forget the devastation brought about by Hurricane Mitch at the end of 1998. Amid the destruction, 17% of our population was left homeless and transportation came to a standstill, whilst the need for healthcare multiplied. Our Hospital Director was appointed coordinator for relief efforts in our part of the country, to deal with a disaster which was one of the biggest challenges we have ever faced.

At the time, we were made aware of ECHO by one of our volunteer workers, so we decided to make a simple request for help. Although ECHO normally provides its medicines and equipment for sale on a not for profit basis, on this occasion they were able to assist us with an emergency donation as well. Almost immediately we received two large shipments of essential supplies based on the list of priority needs we had provided to them. ECHO took care of all arrangements, even managing to fly the consignments to a military airfield near our town.

We are still faced with a great deal of rebuilding of community structures in the aftermath of the hurricane, as well as the task of continuing curative, training and outreach activities to benefit the people of central Honduras.

We thank ECHO from the bottom of our hearts for coming so quickly to our rescue when our community was struck by the worst natural disaster this century.
